Plain text messages appended/prepended to cannot be opened in Outlook

In an environment using Janusgate Exchange 1.0.0 or 1.0.1 and where a rule set is such that content is prepended or appended to a plain text message, then when the recipient attempts to open the message using Microsoft Outlook, then Outlook reports

Cannot open this item.

If the recipient uses Outlook Web Access then the message opens without any issue.


The issue has been rectified in version 1.0.2 and above of Janusgate Exchange.

This issue only manifests itself when:

  • Janusgate Exchange 1.0.1 or 1.0.0 is being used
  • a rule is triggered which prepends or appends content to the message body
  • the message being processed is a pure plain text message (so does not have richer formatted content like HTML or RTF)
  • the recipient is attempting to open the received message in Microsoft Outlook


When the recipient attempts to open the message in Outlook it shows a modal pop-up window that says "Cannot open this item."


The issue is not observed if the recipient opens the received message using Outlook Web Access, so this is a temporary workaround to the problem.
